This requires a lot of active reading to find what really resonates。 Some of these essays have been influential in the newer corporate world in structuring the HR narrative, so worthwhile to read for the historical purposes。 I find generally that WLB essays cannot be this generic (not including gender etc) for them to actually be effective for me

My favourite article is “primal leadership”。 Quoting from the book- “That’s not to say that leaders can’t have a bad day or week: Life happens。 And our research doesn’t suggest that good moods have to be high-pitched or nonstop—optimistic, sincere, and realistic will do。 But there is no escaping the conclusion that a leader must first attend to the impact of his mood and behaviors before moving on to his wide panoply of other critical responsibilities。”To be a great manager starts with knowing h My favourite article is “primal leadership”。 Quoting from the book- “That’s not to say that leaders can’t have a bad day or week: Life happens。 And our research doesn’t suggest that good moods have to be high-pitched or nonstop—optimistic, sincere, and realistic will do。 But there is no escaping the conclusion that a leader must first attend to the impact of his mood and behaviors before moving on to his wide panoply of other critical responsibilities。”To be a great manager starts with knowing how to manage ourselves。 This book is power-packed and wisdom-filled! 。。。more

3 stars。 Fast and light, the airport-bookstore classic for a reason。 For real depth I'd look up Peter Drucker's "Effective Executive"。The best essay is "Manage Your Energy not Your Time"。Big Ideas1。 Think about when employees leave work each day, end of the day, to return to their families。 How do you create a company culture that has them grounded, energized, and ready to be great parents and friends? Better and more present than when they woke up? That's a special opportunity。2。 Managing yours 3 stars。 Fast and light, the airport-bookstore classic for a reason。 For real depth I'd look up Peter Drucker's "Effective Executive"。The best essay is "Manage Your Energy not Your Time"。Big Ideas1。 Think about when employees leave work each day, end of the day, to return to their families。 How do you create a company culture that has them grounded, energized, and ready to be great parents and friends? Better and more present than when they woke up? That's a special opportunity。2。 Managing yourself is much harder (and the root) of managing others。 This means: - knowing yourself - developing yourself - putting yourself in the right positions for impact - managing your energy 3。 Relationships are most important。 Organizations are built on trust not force。 Trust is not the same as liking someone, it is about understanding them。 Sounds naive, but crucially important。 4。 As a manager make sure you are not "letting them put their monkey on your back"。 It doesn't scale。 Be supportive, but firm, that these are their problems and keep next steps with them。5。 The ingredients for resilience are: an even-handed emotional keel, a grounded sense of meaning, a bias towards inventiveness and creative flexibility。 6。 Knowledge workers tend to get caught up in false constraints。 Solve for this with an aggressive bias towards action。 Take initiative! 7。 Manage your energy through: (a) grounding rituals, (b) gratitude and appreciation gestures, (c) minimizing interruptions。Small Ideas- Easier to hold values 100% of time than 98% of the time。- Know if you are a reader or a listener (for information processing)- Know if you are an advisor (clear eyes, room to breath) or a decider (weight on your shoulders)。- Don't try to change weaknesses, instead leverage strengths。 Questions to reflect and re-ground- Am i being results oriented?- Am I taking initiative- Am I focused and clearing distractions- Am I listening and open 。。。more

This book was suggested to me by a coworker and I was NOT disappointed。 These topics never seem to get old and can be used in a variety of leadership aspects。 I found myself asking questions of how I can be a better manager, husband, and father over and over。 Now it's time to put it into practice! So were I reading this as a corporate head, per the design, it probably would have been a 5-star experience。 But I'm not and it was useful - at least the initial articles were, but the last three or four were for scanning。 Can't hate on them providing the rundown of each in brief so one knows what is useful or worth reading in depth。 I'd still recommend it because it is about directing one's actions in meaningful, self-owning ways。 To say there's a shortage of that in business is the understatem So were I reading this as a corporate head, per the design, it probably would have been a 5-star experience。 But I'm not and it was useful - at least the initial articles were, but the last three or four were for scanning。 Can't hate on them providing the rundown of each in brief so one knows what is useful or worth reading in depth。 I'd still recommend it because it is about directing one's actions in meaningful, self-owning ways。 To say there's a shortage of that in business is the understatement of understatements。 。。。more

I couldn't quite grasp why this collection of "must-reads" was so infuriating to read。 I think it's because the themes felt really scattered。 Not sure。 Wish I could get the time back。 I couldn't quite grasp why this collection of "must-reads" was so infuriating to read。 I think it's because the themes felt really scattered。 Not sure。 Wish I could get the time back。 。。。more

This book by Harvard Business Review is a collection of about 11 articles curated on “Managing Yourself”。 Out of the presented 11 articles I can say I enjoy reading about 50%, while the rest I had to struggle through。 The book is meant to be read slowly, as I think we are meant to practice the things we learn from it (tons of exercise materials to go through, if you like things like that, this book is for you)。 I gotta say that about 50% of the book is about self management on its own, while the This book by Harvard Business Review is a collection of about 11 articles curated on “Managing Yourself”。 Out of the presented 11 articles I can say I enjoy reading about 50%, while the rest I had to struggle through。 The book is meant to be read slowly, as I think we are meant to practice the things we learn from it (tons of exercise materials to go through, if you like things like that, this book is for you)。 I gotta say that about 50% of the book is about self management on its own, while the rest of it is about Self Management in relation to leadership。 Therefore, I think this book will be more useful for those who already have leadership positions。 For me the self management articles were very enjoyable, but the leadership articles always feel like a slap on my face—when I read books like this I always end up wondering。 How the hell does one become a good person。 I read all this, but there’s no way I can practice this。 。。。more

There's a lot of good stuff in here。 The best articles for me were:Managing Oneself, Who's Got the Monkey, Be a Better Leader, Moments of Greatness, and Primal Leadership。These were my top lessons from the book:1。 Know your strengths and how you work best。 Work in a job where your values are at least mostly in line with the company and the actions。 If you work best in small groups do not join a huge company。2。 Who's got the monkey? Agree completely with the caption below the title- if you read nothing else on managing yourself, do read this。 It’s very comprehensive and relevant in these times, when we’re all stuck in a fast paced world juggling hats and it’s easy for us to get lost。
